Driving While Intoxicated is a Crime in Florida

 

According to the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles, there are many arrests each year in the State of Florida for driving a motor vehicle while over the legal blood alcohol limit (BAC) but law enforcement still lags far behind the ability to curtail and stop tragic deaths on Florida roads due to drunk driving. The Florida DMV reports:

2011 DUI Statistics

  • 33,625 DUI convictions statewide in Florida
  • 55,722 DUI tickets were issued in Florida in 2011
  • 9,328 were issued by the Florida Highway Patrol
  • 23,649 were issued by Florida Police
  • 21,868 were issued by Florida Sheriffs.

Additionally, the DMV has discovered that some areas of Florida appear to have more likelihood of drunk driving on their streets than others. From the DMV’s 2010 statistics:

  6. Orange County (Orlando) – 1,383
  7. Brevard County (Melbourne) – 1,072
  8. Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) – 985

Mothers Against Drunk Driving have tallied that in Florida in 2010, 678 people died due to drunk driving and the number rose in 2011 to 716.  The Florida state statistics show this for the following Florida counties:
